Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

Landlord Access Abuse?

I am having a real problem with my landlord unlocking my door and walking in anytime he wants. He claims I can not be locking the doors because he has to get in. I am deaf and wear and aide that is the reason the doors are locked when I am home alone. There has never been an emergency here when he does this. I have also been told I can not change the locks and that he must have a key. I am a nervous wreck, I never know when he will enter, he does not knock. Can I put him out? Can I change the locks without a key given to him? Does he have to give prior notice to enter?

Re: Landlord Access Abuse?

If the lease does not give the landlord the right to go into your apartment when you are not there, he cannot. You have a right to your privacy, and as long as you rent it is like your home. If he comes in again call the police and have him arrested for defient trespass.

If the lease says you may not make any alterations, you may not change the locks. However, in your case since he is entering illegally you have a right to protect yourself, so change the locks. Tell him what you are going to do fist. You may also move out, as what he is doing is a breach of the lease.
