Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania
On my lease it states "Tenants are required to have their carpets professionally cleaned every two years at their expense." When I asked if it had been done last year the landlord told me that it was. I then asked if that meant I didn't have to do it this year and they agreed with me.
At the end of my lease I'm now being charged because I didn't have the carpets professionally cleaned. They had made me believe with the wording and the original meeting that I didn't need to. When leaving the landlord told me that I had to do it once every two years if I lived there for two years, but because I only lived there for one year that I had to get it cleaned before leaving.
It doesn't state this anywhere I was never told about it. What's my next step?

Read your lease again and look under the part governing duties of tenant upon termination of lease.
It is common that a tenant have their carpets professionally cleaned upon expiration of the lease when they move or else the landlord is going to charge for it.
The 2 year period may be for tenants who stay in a property MORE than 2 years.
