Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

Legality of a year and a half lease?

Can anyone tell me if this is legal?

I have been living in the same apartment in

Pennsylvania for about 4 years, in which the rent has

been on time and fully paid. I have a lease that

expires in June 2002. It is presently January 2002,

and he is requiring me to sign a lease from June 2002

until June 2003. He has threatened to have new

tenants to sign the lease if I do not do this ASAP. I

feel that signing a year and a half lease is

rediculous. I would rather resign the lease upon its

expiration. It does not say anything in the terms of

the lease regarding breakage--ie, what the penalties

are. Should I just sign the lease and get him off my

back? I would much rather tell him that what he is

doing to me is not legal.

Here is my opinion, your lease expires in 6 months he wants to know now if you want another year added, I don't see an issue with that. He is basically telling you if you don't sign now there is a strong possibility that in six months you will need to move because it will be rented.

There is nothing illegal here as long as he allows you to stay until June.
