my mother passed away, am I responsible for paying her prime equity loan? I cannot afford to go into probate.

Assuming you didn't cosign the promissory note. No absolutely not, Don't let them tell you that somehow you inherited the debt. You didn't.

You need to write them a so sorry letter and tell them to take a hike.. Politely though.
