Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

No Receipt?

I've been renting at my current address for 5 years and this is a first for me. Recently my apartment is under new management, I went to the office to pay my rent & was told that they don't give rent receipts. Can they legally take my rent money & refuse to give me a receipt?

Re: No Receipt?

You asked about rent receipts.

A landlord must provide a rent receipt if the rent is paid in cash. If the rent is paid by check then then may rely on the check functioning as the rent receipt. If they demand a specific type of payments, such as a money order, you should examine what type of receipt will be sufficient.

But generally, it is common for landlords to forgo receipts for rent paid by check.

Re: No Receipt?

If you're paying by check I don't see a problem as you can always get a copy of the canceled check.

Now if you pay in cash I would expect a receipt. Though I doubt many places to cash for rent anymore.

Did they give you a reason why they don't give receipts?
