Renewal of Lease
My lease expired July 2002. I never received any renewal notification from the landlord. I want to give notice for a Jan. 2003 move out. and theyre saying If I leave early, they will penelize me 1 months rent. Theyre saying the lease renews automatically. Can they legally do this?

Check your lease. There is usually a provision that says how the lease may be terminated (at the end of a term) and how it is renewed. Some leases provide that if neither the landlord nor the tenant terminates within a certain time before the end of the lease term, then it automatically renews for another term.
