If your mate dies, should you put the house in your name only?

You have posted this in the Social Security law list. Please re-post in the real estate or estate planning section.

The answer depends on how you and your "mate" hold the property, so please include in the new question

1. your legal relationship with the deceased and

2. how your names are listed on the Deed. i.e., tenants in common, joint tenants with right of survivorship or tenants by the entireties (husband & wife). If you have questions, look on the deed.
