Legal Question in Social Security Law in Pennsylvania

Social Security and mutiple marriages

When someone passes away, who is entiltled to his/her Social Security? Is it the first husband/wife or the person that is married to the person at the time of death?

Does it make a difference on how long the marriages lasted?

Thank you for your time !

Re: Social Security and mutiple marriages

No one is entitled to a deceased persons Social Security. When a person dies, his Social Security checks stop. There is a lump sum death benefit of a few hundred dollars, payable to eligible persons.

However, certain persons, such as surviving spouse or dependant minor children may be eligible for survivor's benefits.

Surviving, divorced spouses may be eligible as well.
