Re: after death tax bill

Unless the deceased husband had a will leaving everything to the brother, and sometimes even when that is the case, a wife has an interest in the husband's estate. If there was no will, usually the surviving wife and children, if any, inherit, not the brother.

A will may also have directed how estate and inheritance taxes should be paid. If there was no such statement in the will, or there was no will, usually the heir or beneficiary who receives something is responsible for paying the tax on that thing.

There are also income taxes due, and the personal representative of the estate is responsible for determining all debts of the deceased, including taxes, and paying those and the estate administration costs before distributing any assets.

If you are the widow, you should consult with a local estates lawyer to determine what your rights and responsibilities are.
