Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Pennsylvania

Distribution of will in Pennsylvania

My grandmother recently died. My ex-husband is the executor of her will. He is wanting our families social security numbers to so something with tax on the money. None of us want to give his such personal information.

Can we take care of paying the tax ourselves after the money is distributed or must he have our social security numbers?

Re: Distribution of will in Pennsylvania

Dear Madam:

Generally, it has been my experience that I don't need the Social Security numbers of the beneificiaries of a person's estate in order to complete and facilitate the filings of necessary estate and inheritance tax returns. If your ex-husband has hired an attorney to assist him with the administration of the estate, then I would suggest that you contact that attorney directly and ask him why you need to provide your Social Security number. If you don't like the answer that you are given, then I would probably advise you not to provide such information. If you have an individual tax obligation relating to some asset of the estate that you are to receive, you can always satisfy same on your own. Thanks.
