father passed away with no will he resided in NY and i live in pa he have to children me and my brother where do we start so we can find any assets ect... he was receiving royalty's and paying back child support up until last year and our mother has been deceased since 2005.

You need to discuss this with a probate attorney in New York since that is where your father resided.

I don't understand your question. Either you or your brother will have to be appointed by the NY Surrogate's Court as personal representative of your father's estate. Whoever is personal representative will have to figure out what your father owned and owed. The personal representative can start by going through your father's effects and mail. House, land, cars and bank accounts are easy to locate. See if he had insurance policies and contact the insurer if so to claim any benefits. Contact any HR departments of past or current employers to see if there were IRAs, 401(k)s or other retirement benefits owed.
