Is it better to have a lawyer help you with your will and conform to the state you reside in or the state your children(heirs) live in

I agree with my colleagues. If this is your will then your children's place of residence is irrelevant in terms of you making a will. It is you who needs to hire a lawyer for the state where you live, not them. Your assets will be distributed as per your state's law when you pass and any estate must be probated in the county/state where you live at the time of your death. Your children's place of residence would only be relevant perhaps in determining which of them would best be able to be the personal representative or agent under a financial or health care power of attorney.
