Generally, a will is not filed until the person whose will it is has died. A will may be filed before, but it is not public record and no estate is opened. That is because, until death, a person may change the will many times by making codicils [amendments] to the original will in a separate document that is witnessed and signed with the same formalities as a will, or by signing an altogether new will.
