Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Pennsylvania

no will

My mother passed away 3 yrs ago w/o a will. She didn't own anything but did have 50 shares in a stock. My sister & I are trying to sell her shares but w/o a will, we can't get a bank medallion to verify that we own her shares. An attorney costs more than the shares are worth.

What to do or do nothing?

Re: no will

Ah, the proverbial Catch 22. Unless you and your sister are able to navigate the probate process on your own, you may be right that it is not even worth trying to redeem the stock.

If I was to take you through the process of probating your mother's estate, you would probably be looking at a minimum of $1,000.00 in legal fees. If you have the time and patience, you can probably get all of the probate forms that you will need either on line or at the Allegheny County Register of Wills Office.

Don't undertake this unless it is worth it. If you'd like to discuss this further, please see my website at www.americanwillsandestates.com or contact me at [email protected]. Thank you.
