Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Pennsylvania

Wills

My mother-in-law owns a home in Puerto Rico. She was widowed in 2006. She has 6 surviving children. One of them lives in the house since my mother-in-law lives in Pennsylvania. She would like to have a will drawn here in Pennsylvania where she has lived for 18 years. Will this will be honored by Puerto Rican laws? The catch is that she would like to exclude 3 of the children from her will. One of the remaining children will remain in the house and as part owner with the other two who are in favor with their mother. Also in this will do you need to name who is included and who is excluded? Thanks in advance.

Re: Wills

You should re-post this question specifying Puerto Rico law, which is applicable as to the property located there.

In PA, there are ways of excluding legal heirs [such as children, spouse] but this should be done with the assistance of an experienced estate lawyer. Your mother-in-law needs to be the client and should meet with the lawyer without any children or other people present.

She may also want to consult with a real estate lawyer in Puerto Rico about other alternatives with respect to the property itself.
