Expenses that were not notify to us

Hello my father passaway last year and their was a 12,000 or more of funeral expenses that came out of his bank account after he died. I have spoke to my sister en puerto rico and was not notify of these expenses. He own a boat and she sold his boat and disn't recieved a penny. I understood that once a person died everthing will be frozen. Can you please comment on this if this is o.k. I live in boston. And this happened in puertorico

It depends how the property is held. Theoretically you are completely correct. But if the property is not or was not in your father's name or was in a joint name, or in an account where the was a beneficiary, then it is not subject to the probate freeze.

You don't state whether your sister (or anyone else) was appointed executor or administrator of your dad's estate. If she were appoonted, she would have the authority to pay his bills, sell his property and make distributions to his heirs if there was enough money to pay heirs after the bills were paid. If you can't get information from your sister, I suggest you contact an attorney in PR who can help you figure this out.
