Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Puerto Rico
I need help please!!!!
In July 2001 my father died in meriden ct. I was only 15 years old at the time. He had property in Puerto rico. He left a will for my two sisters who were both thirteen and I and a girl in puerto rico who considered him a father figure she was sixteen at the time. My sisters and I recieved a copy of the will here in ct. I am confused on what to do because my sisters and I were told that we couldnt claim anything until we were 18. I am 19 now and my sister just turned 18 last week I want to know what I have to do to claim my part of the will. Every time I call a family member to ask about what I have to do to claim my part of the will they claim not to know anything about the will. My aunt has the power of attorney but has not called as at all since his death to speak to us about it. A cousin of mine who lives here in ct told me that the the girl in Puerto Rico is the only one recieving her part of the will. It's been four and a half years and my sisters and I have no idea what to do to go claim the property in Puerto Rico. We are tired of everyone not wanting to give us information on my father's property. Should we bring a lawyer with us? How long would it take for us to get our part of the property?

If he died in Connecticut, did anyone open an estate for him in the Meriden Probate Court? If yes, then check with the Court Clerk. If not here, was an estate opened in PR? If yes, check with the Probate clerk in PR. If not, hire a lawyer in PR. Real estate in PR will have to be handled by a lawyer there, anyway.
