Property dispute
My mother and my aunt own propery in Puerto Rico. Recently my aunt died and my mother came across a legal document where both of them were named as the defendants in 1989. Only my aunt was served. My mother was living overseas in Japan at the time. It is a suit for abandonment of property. Is this document legal? What can my mother do about this now. I spoke with a legal assistant who told me the attorney can not give me difinative answers because the documents were written up in Puerto Rico.

It depends on the nature of the suit and the nature of the property. It also depends on whether your mother and your aunt owned this property jointly or not. The information provided is too scarce, and it may just be that the suit was never fully prosecuted, or to the contrary, that a judgment entered affecting the property rights held by your mother. There's no such thing as a suit for abandonment of property in the jursidiction. However, if anyone entered the property and took it over, that may be an entirely different affair.
