Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Rhode Island

I was talking to this person online a while ago on a video chat called Camfrog and they signed me up for this website where i would do videos for money.(THE WEBSITE WAS NOT CAMFROG IT WAS A DIFFERENT WEBSITE) this was like 5 months ago (I only did the videos for about 1 month). about 1 week ago i got an email from someone i didnt even know saying that someone was selling videos of me over camfrog. Mind you i had not been on Camfrog for 3 months so it wasn't me. They were impersonating me selling videos to random people. They were going on several names that were just like mine telling people that they were me. So the ONLY people that would have access to those videos was the guy and his girlfriend who hired me. So i automatically assumed it was them because they were the only people who knew everything about me because i had to give them my ID when i signed up for the website. So they knew my address, whole name ..etc. I was deleted from the camming website after about 1 month because i didn't want to do it anymore. so no one had access to my videos EXCEPT for the people who hired me so it only made sense that it was them who were selling the videos on camfrog. Then when i found this out we sent emails back and forth and they denied it. I called his girlfriend a bunch of bad names along with him. I went into a video chat on camfrog today because i saw that the guy who hired me was in the room where i heard they were selling videos of me under a name similar to mine. So i went into the chatroom and I said "so this is the room that my videos are being sold?" and i said a couple other things that werent anything serious and now these people want to take me to court for Slandering their company name (because i went into the chat while one of their "models" were in there and she supposedly quit the website) I never once said anything about their website though. they are also suing me for harrassment (the email i sent calling his gf a whore and that she was fat and to keep shaking her goods for money) and lastly they are taking me for falsely accusing them of selling my videos which i still believe they did because all the evidence points to both of them and they know it. They live in kentucky and i live in rhode island. I'm 18 years old and i have a part time job making minimum wage and i'm not sure what to do. there is no way i can make it to kentucky and im gonna end up getting a warrent for my arrest because i didnt show up. what can i do about this? or what should i do about this? please help...i didnt know which area of law to put this under either.

I suggest you sit with a lawyer to discuss the facts and circumstances in person and, if you have already been sued, that you meet with a lawyer immediately to ensure you do not waive any rights by delaying.

For example, in RI an Answer would need to be filed to most civil suits within 20 days or the party sued would basically lose automatically unless there were a very good reason for not answering on time.

The RI Bar Association offers a Lawyer Referral Service (401.421.7799 E-MAIL: [email protected]) and a Volunteer Lawyer Program (401-421-7758 EMAIL [email protected]).

If you like, a Collaborative Staff General Counsel would be willing to meet with you for an initial consultation at no charge, as well.

Best wishes,

Scott J. Summer, Staff General Counsel
