Legal Question in DUI Law in Rhode Island

drunk driving accident

19 year old boy took our daughter's keys without permission and totaled her car while driving drunk. He had no insurance . we had no collision as it was a used car.His father wont help us and the boy is in college and has no money. we want our daughter's car replaced so she can use it. Is there any way to collect? the accident was in Rhode Island and we live and insure our cars in Mass.

You can sue the Driver of the vehicle and garnish any wages he earns.

I suppose you could seek to have criminal charges filed in Rhode Island for theft of the vehicle, and hope that the court orders restitution for the driver to repay your daughter for the value of the vehicle.
