Legal Question in Family Law in Rhode Island

In feb of 2009 i found out i was the Bio Father of my Ex's son ( she had him after we had split he'll be 3 years old in July 2011). I moved around a lot and didnt have a stable place to provide him, and at the time he was in his mothers care. In may 2009 the state placed him in Foster care where abouts unknown and untill recently i havent sought my parental rights. Now after going to DCYF they are telling me i need to go to court to figure out if i still have rights and if i can gain custody of him... i have ALWAYS paid child support and provided health care and never failed to appear in court concerning his well being. Is there a chance i dont have any rights? should i get a lawyer? Also the court date is in 2 1/2 months... anyway to request it be sooner? what should i bring with me?

Emergency Motion will get you before a Judge swiftly.

Go to the Probate and Family Court and read the case files that deal with your ex and your child.
