Legal Question in Family Law in Rhode Island

relocating

I have a current court order in effect for the state of Maine that has determined joint custody for my son with primary residence with me and visitation with his father. I moved out of Maine 2 1/2 years ago and have managed to maintain reasonable visitation arrangements with my son's father who is still in Maine.

I will be graduating soon and would like to explore my options outside of this state which would greatly effect the current visitation schedule. I am willing to continue visitation but would like the schedule changed. I would like some information on what my legal responsibilities and options are if I wanted to move out of state and change the current order.

Re: relocating

The law of Maine may require that modification of custody or visitation be determined

by Maine even though you have lived in Rhode Island for two years. If so, you may

need to obtain permission from Maine to move to another state. If not, you can move

without permission. Perhaps you can reach an agreement with the father so you don't

have to deal with lawyers and court litigation.
