I recently went to small claims regarding getting my security deposit back from a landlord. I spent all day in court and when it was our turn only the girls that work in the officed showed and not their landlord. Should I have won by default?

No- unless they were barred by Statute. If the court allowed them to proceed I assume they had authority, such as POA. Call or e-mail for further assistance.
