Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Rhode Island
Need to Sublease Apt- Found Potential Sec 8 Applic...DeniedByLandlord!
My fiance and I signed a 12mth lease which ends May 31st. '06- Just graduated and got a job offer out of state which we had to accept. Notified management company over 30 days in advance and were told we could sublease. The woman across the hall (diff. landlord) was interested and on Sec 8 (we are not). I asked if we could sublet to this Sec 8 woman and we were told by the landlord No based on the fact that they have had a bad experience with Sec 8 tenants in the past. Isn't that descrimination? We now have until Jan 1st to find someone and the landlord refuses to understand our situation even though we are trying to do the right thing and find someone to take over instead of just bailing out. We are just starting out in life and don't want to be sued bc we couldn't find the ''perfect'' person this landlord seems to want. We are in a desperate situation and need to know what legal action we could take if they refuse this woman based on bad sec 8 experiences. I already explained this woman is trustworthy and keeps her current residency immaculate. Any help is appreciated! I just felt that it wasn't right to deny someone for unjust reasons esp. when we are all in a tight situation here.
