lawyer offers money under the table

is there anything you can do if your car accident case has been going on for 3 yrs and no money seen, the lawyer went to court and said it would be more time. the lawyer had come to my work and said he would pay me a couple thousand dollars from his pocket if i signed a paper. if he went to court there must have been a settlemet? and why would he offer me 2 thous from his pocket if there was no settle from the court? anything i can do to see if the case was settled in or out of court?
