As a franchise attorney, I can tell you the issue is not level of income. When you start your business, as long as you operate as a sole proprietorship and have no employees, you simply use your social security number and file a Schedule C (sole proprietor profit and loss) at the end of the year. If you go beyond that, have employees or form a corporation, LLC, etc., then you need a tax i.d. number. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
