Legal Question in Consumer Law in South Carolina
Rental housing lease termination
I have lived in an apartment complex for 3 years. I just renewed my lease for an additional year. Three months into the lease I lost my job and can not afford the rent. I have move back in with my parents. The rental office said that I can break my lease but I will be responsible to pay the entire remaining years rent. Is that legal? My parents are willing to pay a lease break penalty but will not pay monthly rent for nine months and I am not living there. What can I do?

First of all, if this took place in Georgia, I can't help you - Georgia law would apply. It's not really "consumer law" per se but generally speaking, in a lease, then yes, you're obligated for the remainder of the contract term if you break the lease. However, the terms of the lease agreement would have to be checked carefully to give a conclusive opinion.
