Legal Question in Criminal Law in South Carolina

7 year old bad check..help!

I have made some mistakes in the past with bad checks. I thought that they were all taken care of either buy paying for them or doing jail time. About 2 years ago I went to the check place to make sure I had none left, if their any were I was going to take care of them, cause I had some money to do so at that time, their was none there, so I thought everything was ok, concerning my past with these bad checks. Well this past Saterday I recived a letter from a lawyers firm in New Jersey, stating that I still owe Best Buy 266.05 from Dec. 12th 1996. there return charge is 30.00. Now, I ask them if this was ever taken to court, and they said no, I am completly shocked! I live in spartanburg county of SC. Why did they wait 7 years to pop up like this? What can I do? Can I fight this in anyway cause of the 7 years it took them to send this to me and cause great stress at this time? PLEASE HELP!! Is their a 3 strike's law in SC? I have a disabled son as well that needs me. I hope you can give me some advice!

Thank You for your time!!!!

If the bad check is in NJ, then you need to go back and ask a NJ lawyer. Otherwise, you can dispute it, but you may find it easier to pay it, rather than the time and expense of fighting it. Your welcome to call for more advise.
