Assault Charges

I got into an argument with another man who was driving a truck. He proceeded to push me with his vehicle to the point where if I hadn't stepped back I would have been knocked down and run over. In anger, I opened the truck door and pulled him out. After a heated argument we parted and went our separate ways. Neither of us struck the other. I called the police to file assault charges against him, but I ended up being the one arrested. Later that day I tried to file charges, and my wife, who witnessed his assault, tried to file a statement, but the police told me that we would have to wait until after my court date. Is this normal procedure? Wouldn't it help my defense to have already filed charges against him?

Unfortunatly, it happens that way. The reason they wouldn't let you file is because a lot of people simply file charges to retaliate after being arrested.
