Bad Checks

I might have warrants for checks written 3 yrs ago.I thought they were taken care of but I dont think so.I need to renew my DL and do intend to cover checks.first how can I find out if I have any and if I pay directly to the person they were written to and get receipt and inform pd of payment will I still get arrested.I need to renew next week and am sure they can bring it up at the DMV.Please help
