Legal Question in Criminal Law in South Carolina

false conviction record

The state of Alabama has in their records that my husband has a felony cocaine possesion conviction that's dated in 1996, however this is not true he did get in trouble but was never convicted of cocaine possesion. We live in the state of South Carolina and recently found out that this is the reason he has not been able to find a permanent job. He has no felonies but when a background check is done this false conviction record shows up. What's the first step in trying to resolve this issue. We appreciate any help you can give.
