How long can you hold someone for a high profile murder case, until trial?

Everyone has a right to a "speedy trial."

The problem is that no definite period of time has been established to constitute what "speedy" is. We still have people in South Carolina waiting trial on cases 3 and 4 years old. There are ways to make the case come to trial quicker if that is what the defendant wants.
