Legal Question in Criminal Law in South Carolina

simple possession of marijuana

My husband was charged with simple possession of marijuana. This his first time ever in trouble with the law. He's 41 years old. My question is what is the maxi-fine here. I have other cops telling me 100-200 dollars. But this highway trooper charged him 647.00. He has to got to court. Do you think the judge can or will reduce the fine? I can't believe the amount charged. He has nothing on his record. And I think PTI is just as much as the fine. I'm thinking that if they are gonna make this amount stick that he should go through PTi and get it off his record.

With court costs, it will be at least that much, if not more. And his license will be suspended.

I would recommend PTI. It's about $100 to apply, and then a fee of $200-300 depending on where you live. After the time period is up and the community service is done, though...the charges are dismissed and you can apply to expunge his record.
