Can an employer check your credit report prior to being hired for work?

Yes. Happens all the time and they can use that information to determine that they do not want to hire you. They would need to have your permission to run the credit check and they would have to tell you about the affect of the credit report. You then can obtain your credit report for free and see if there are any mistakes.
