is it possible to avoid hiring an attourney and pursue adoption of a child on your own

You can represent yourself in any Family Court case in South Carolina, but it is usually not a good idea.
Adoption cases are complicated and complex, and I would strongly recommeng against even attempting to represent oneself in that type of case because of all of the potential problems that can arise.
