Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

I am in need of advice regarding divorce. I was married 23 years ago to a man and seperated a year after marriage. Shortly after that he filed for a divorce and I signed the papers for him to turn into his lawyer. However, I checked recently with the city of Chicago (wanting to get married again) and they informed me there was never a divorce. I got ahold of the man I am still married to and he told me he doesn't remember anything about having a lawyer or filing. I asked him if he would persue the divorce because I am in Charleston SC now and on unemployment, which he replied I am the one who left so I need to persue the divorce and pay for it. He has never given me anything, nor supported his son (which is now 24) and I was wondering if there was any way to get him to pay for the divorce, or what my entitlements are.
