Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina
Is it possible to get alimony if I file for a legal seperation?
I have been married for over 19 years. My husband recently went back to work in engineering making very good wages. He is 62 years old and I am 45 and on disability. My monthly income is around $570 per month. He has stocks, ira, and other investments that I really know nothing about the value of as he has always kept his finances to himself. My question is would it be possible for me to obtain some amount of alimony from him if I file for legal seperation and move out of state to live with family members? How is it determined wether or not a spouse will pay any alimony and any idea of the amount I might be awarded if any? Thanks in advance for replys!

Based on the limited information you provided, you should certainly be entitled to receive alimony from your spouse, based on the disparity in your incomes, the length of your marriage, and other factors. I believe that the challenge in your case will be to determine the _amount_ of alimony that he will have to pay, and not whether or not he will have to pay any. The amount can range widely from case to case and judge to judge.
These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case.
