Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

alimony laws

If I divorce my husband in Georgia and he moves to South Carolina - is he still legally liable to pay me alimony?

Re: alimony laws

If a valid Order is issued in Georgia requiring him to pay alimony, then he cannot avoid that obligation simply by moving to another state.

If he does not pay in accordance with the Order, you can seek to enforce the Order in Georgia or in South Carolina (after domesticating/registering the Order here).

If you need additional information, you can visit my family law blog (www.SCFamilyLaw.com) or our website (www.StevensFirm.com).

Good luck,

A Georgia divorce decree remains enforeceable no matter where in the U.S. he moves.

Your question indicates that you probably are not currently working with a lawyer. You need to employ an attorney to represent your interests. Without your own attorney, you will lack the assurance that the judgment that you obtain will contain conditions that are enforceable anywhere, including Georgia. Call me if you are interested in pursuing this.
