Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

Baby last name change

I had a baby about 3 months ago and the guy who I thought was the father signed the birth certificate and gave her his last name. Now there is a possibility she may not be his and we are establishing paternity. How do I go about getting her name once paternity is established and I have heard that it cost nothing if the baby has not reached 6 months yet is this true.

Re: Baby last name change

There is no "grace period" for changing a child's name. If your suspected father is not the father, you can bring an action against the other person to determine paternity, address child support, request a name change, etc.

These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case.
