Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina
change name spelling
If I want to change the spelling of my name, i.e. from Alissa to Alisa (to help with pronunciation), do I have to do that legally with a name change request in front of a judge, etc.?

Re: change name spelling
You can just change the spelling yourself and use "Alisa" as an alias, of sorts, if you wish to do so. It would be akin to having a nickname, as I use Ben instead of my formal name Benjamin.
However, if you want to legally change your name, you will need to bring an action in Family Court to do so. This process is not very difficult, though it is cumbersome as there are several different documents that must be obtained before the Court can grant the name change.
It is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to make sure that your case is handled correctly. If you need more information, you can visit my family law blog (www.SCFamilyLaw.com) or our website (www.StevensFirm.com). I wish you the best of luck.
