which has more authority/rights? primary custodial parent or joint custody. I opted for joint custody with my ex-husband with me retaining primary custodial residence.

In a sole custody situation, that parent can make decisions for his/her child. With joint custody, both parents have equal say so, which can lead to problems when they cannot agree.
