Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

child emancipation

I have had no contact with my son since birth. I pay my child support weekly but he just turned 18 years old. What do i have to do to stop paying child support if the child is not going on to school. I have no way of knowing what is going on she has moved to a different state.

Thanks.

Re: child emancipation

You would probably need to get a copy of his birth certificate and take it to the Family Court Clerk's Office where you are paying child support. They may also require a copy of his high school diploma or something stating that he graduated or dropped out. If you know the last school he attended, you should contact that school to obtain those records. If all else fails, you should contact an attorney to commence an action to terminate child support. This may cost you some money, but it would probably save you some money in the long run.
