Child Support

When does child support payments usually stop? My child lives in South Carolina and will turn 18 January 2009. My child will graduate HS in 2009.

Under TN law child support generally stops when the child reaches age 18, unless the child is in high school at the time and is progressing toward graduation as normal, in which case it continues until the child's class graduates. The other primary exception is if the child has special needs and will continue to require parental support after reaching age 18. It also may stop early if the child becomes emancipated early, generally by marriage before reaching age 18, or by simply moving out of a parent's home before reaching age 18.

Typically, when the child turns 18 or graduates high school, whichever occurs last. This can vary by case, however.

In SC, child support stops when the child turns 18 unless the Order says otherwise.
