Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina
College Expenses
In my marital dissolution, my daughter's father is to pay for her college tuition, books, fees, room&board, etc. all expenses related to college. She has chosen to live at home rather than on campus. I contend that her father should still pay room&board. He says he does not need to send any money to help out every month because she lives at home. I think he should because she has to live somewhere during school and this is part of his obligation. She obtained scholarships so his entire check for school, including books, was less than $1000. Is he legally obligated to pay an amount each month. I have requested that he pay $500 a month based on the amount of room&board, meal ticket, etc that he would have paid had she lived on campus divided by the number of months per semester. All monthly child support stopped at 18, so the $750 a month he used to send has ceased. Also, he promised to buy her a car if she got a scholarship(which she did), he has reneged on that as well. Are verbal agreements binding? Can I hold him legally to this agreement or is he off the hook in both cases?
Thank you for your help.

Re: College Expenses
If everything you are saying is in the final divorce decree signed by a judge then he can be held in contempt of court. the courts have no way of knowing that he is violating a court order unless and until you bring it to their attention. Please consult an attorney in your area or contact SC Centers for Equal Justice for additional help.
