Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

Contempt of court regarding alimony

I was divorced 18 months ago after 35 years of marriage. My ex depleted all our holdings and moved to South Carolina. I have never worked outside of the marriage other then in a business we owned together which he sold wihtout my knowledge. I was awarded lifetime alimony, a life insurance policy with me as the benny, and a lump cash settlement. To date I have not received anything. He left this state and now seems untouchable. My attorney has informed me I must hire an attorney in South Carolina and start the whole process again. I do not have the funds to do this. Is there anyway I can collect what I was awarded without having to do this. He has sinced remarried and says he needs he is not working and has no money. This was a man who earned a substantial income. He has also cashed in the one thing I had which was a annuity for a small amout in my name. I did not know that he was the owner. I don't think it should matter as I was awarded this in court. This is such a mess and I so need to decide what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Contempt of court regarding alimony

You can levy against any property he still owns in New Jersey. Otherwise, your attorney is mostly correct. You will have to enforce the judgment in his new home state, but you will not have to relitigate the entire matter.
