Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

My friend and her 17 year old child moved from Georgia to Columbia, South Carolina on Oct 2, 2009. Well since they have been there her mother has started using drugs again. I told the mother that she cannot come back to my house so she left her daughter with me and went back to Georgia. I have decided to let the daughter finish her Senior year of high school and live with me. I would like to know what are my rights to keep the child and what is the child's rights?

Under SC law, you don't necessarily have any "rights" to the child, since she is not your child and there is no Order giving you any such rights. The safest course of action would be for the parents to sign a custody agreement specifying that you will have custody of the child until she's 18, and then having that agreement approved by the Court.

These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case.
