how to legally pick a guardian
If I write a letter and get it noterized stating who will be the guardian of my child in the occerance of my death and stating that he is to have my belongings will that be legal or what exactly do I have to do.

You need to have a Will drafted for you, and in that document, you will not only specify who will receive what items from your estate but you will also name who you wish to serve as your child's guardian.
Because these issues are so important, this needs to be done by an experienced qualified attorney to avoid any problems/complications down the road.
