Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina
order of protection
A dear friend was counseled to get an Order of Protection when she applies for legal separation. She has yet to be find out just how much that would cost her in the state of SC. Does anyone know the answer? Also, what exactly is the difference between an order of protection and a restraining order?

Re: order of protection
The Order for Protection is filed through Safe Homes, and there is not a cost for it, unless the Clerk charges a filing fee. Due to the way these are filed, I don't have a way to know if they do or don't charge a filing fee.
However, your friend can (and should) hire an attorney to represent her at the Order for Protection hearing. Her spouse will probably be represented, and she needs to make sure that her issues are properly presented to the Court.
These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case.
