Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

Petition for Name Change

I am in the process of getting my name changed. I have submitted all required documents (www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t15c049.htmto) the family court clerk and paid the fee. However, they tell me that this only opens a record/file, but doesn't actually assign a court date or start any legal proceedings. There is something else I must do, but they ''can't'' tell me what it is. What is my next step in this process?

Re: Petition for Name Change

You should consult an attorney to handle this for you, to ensure that it's done correctly, instead of trying to do it yourself. These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case. If you need more information, you can visit my family law blog (www.SCFamilyLaw.com) or our website (www.StevensFirm.com). I wish you the best of luck.
