Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

I have been separated for over 2 years from my husband. Things are obviously not going to work out between us so I need to file for divorce. We neither have any reason to expect the other to contest. Money is the major issue with divorce being so expensive, leaving us feeling trapped. Do we each HAVE to retain a lawyer? At the point that we're at, is there any legal, affordable, fairly quick and painless way to divorce other than online? Life is just passing us by.

You can represent yourself in any Family Court case in South Carolina, but you will need to know what to file, how to file it, where to file it, how to pursue it, etc. If you don't know the correct answers to all of those items, then you will most likely create a mess for yourselves by trying to save a little and doing it yourself.

I can tell you from doing these cases for many years that it can cost thousands more to try to fix those types of problems once created -- if they can be fixed at all. Unfortunately, I have seen many situations where people cost themselves a fortune by trying to save a few dollars, and there was nothing that could be done to reverse the damage they had done.

These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case. If you need more information, you can visit my family law blog (www.SCFamilyLaw.com) or our website (www.StevensFirm.com). I wish you the best of luck.
